Why Tanween Mattered to Me

Participating in Ithra Tanween 2025 was more than a design challenge—it was an inspiring deep dive into creativity, culture, and innovation. As a product designer passionate about creating meaningful solutions, Tanween offered me the perfect space to learn, experiment, and grow. Here’s a look into my journey, divided into the key chapters that shaped my experience.

When I first applied to the Product Design Challenge, I was drawn to Tanween’s reputation as one of the leading creative platforms in the region. It is a space where emerging designers meet industry experts, challenge assumptions, and co-create impactful ideas.
For me, joining this challenge was not just about competing—it was about pushing my design thinking, expanding my creative boundaries, and immersing myself in a community that celebrates innovation.

Research and Insights: Understanding the Real Problem

The challenge began with an intensive research phase. I spent time studying user behavior, reviewing case studies, and understanding the cultural context of the brief.
This step helped me clearly define the pain points and the real needs behind the problem we were asked to solve. Whether it was environmental concerns, user accessibility, or product usability, I learned how critical it is to build a strong foundation before jumping into ideation.

Our challenge focused on palm-tree waste, specifically ليف النخل—a natural fiber that has long been part of the farmer’s daily life. Through research, field insights, and interviews, I learned how this material once played a major role in Saudi craftsmanship but gradually became overlooked and discarded.

Turning research into design concepts was one of the most exciting parts of the journey. I sketched, prototyped, mapped user journeys, and explored materials—always returning to the core idea of designing for people.
Tanween’s environment encouraged experimentation. I was able to discuss ideas with mentors, receive feedback from industry experts, and refine my concepts with clarity and purpose.
This phase reminded me why I love product design: the opportunity to create solutions that blend function, emotion, and storytelling.

Guided by our research, our team investigated how palm fiber could be transformed into new biomaterials with functional and economic potential. We explored different recipes, tested blends, and analyzed material behavior.

Final Presentation: Sharing My Vision

The culmination of the challenge was the final presentation. Preparing for it pushed me to communicate my design with clarity—explaining the research behind it, the decisions I made, and the impact I envisioned.
Presenting my work in a space like Ithra, surrounded by creative leaders and fellow participants, was both empowering and inspiring. It marked the moment where my work transformed from a concept into a story worth sharing.

At the end of the challenge, our team presented a dual-material product solution that transforms palm-fiber waste into functional and market-ready materials. This final outcome became the heart of our Tanween presentation.
