Being Selected as a Panelist: A Proud Moment

This year, I had the honor of being invited as a panel speaker at the First Design Research Forum hosted by Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University (IAU). The event marked a significant milestone for the College of Design as it launched its inaugural forum dedicated entirely to creativity, innovation, and research-driven design. Being part of this moment—on stage, sharing my story—was both humbling and empowering.

The forum brought together designers, researchers, educators, and industry experts to explore how design research shapes future solutions. I was invited to speak on Panel Discussion II: Adhlal Experience in Jeddah Albalad, representing my work and journey with Adhlal in the field of design research.

What I Shared: My Journey in Design Research

During the panel, I spoke about my experience diving deep into design research—how it taught me to observe, listen, question, and build solutions rooted in human behavior and cultural context.

Some of the key topics I discussed included:

  • How design research informs meaningful problem-solving

  • What working with Adhlal taught me about community-driven insights

  • The value of documenting processes, not just outcomes

  • Why young designers should adopt a research mindset early

I also shared real stories from projects in Jeddah Albalad and other initiatives where research wasn’t just a phase—it was the foundation that shaped every decision.

What touched me most was the engagement from students afterward, many of whom approached me to ask questions about building their careers, conducting field research, and finding their voice as designers.

A Forum That Elevated the Design Community

IAU’s Design Research Forum was more than an event; it was a celebration of curiosity and innovation. The discussions sparked new ideas, highlighted the importance of academic–industry collaboration, and showcased the growing demand for research-based design in Saudi Arabia’s creative sector.

It was inspiring to hear from other panelists and see the thoughtful questions from the audience. Moments like these remind me why I am passionate about the design field—not only as a designer but as someone who believes in the power of shared knowledge.

At the end of the forum, I was honored to receive a recognition award from the College of Design, thanking me for my contribution to the successful launch of the first Design Research Forum.
